Why MeasureLab
The software in the box is Windows-only. MeasureLab runs anywhere.
Most USB microscopes come with a measuring program that only runs on Windows. MeasureLab does the same job in the browser you already have, on any computer the microscope plugs into.
Typical bundled software
- Windows only, often an old version
- Installer from a mini CD or a vendor download page
- Measurements stay on the one PC it is installed on
- Mac, Chromebook and Linux users get a picture but no measuring
MeasureLab
- Works on Mac, Windows, Chromebook and Linux
- Opens in a browser tab, with nothing to install or update
- Measurement table with statistics and CSV export
- Projects saved to the cloud with a free account, and read-only share links
Features
Everything you need to measure under a microscope
From the first live frame to a report-ready table, without leaving the browser.
Live view and capture
Pick your microscope from the camera list, watch the live feed and freeze a frame with one click or the F key. Images you already have can be uploaded too.
Calibrate once
Draw a line along something of known length, like a stage micrometer or a ruler, and type in its size. Units go from nanometres to inches.
Measure in real units
Length, rectangle and circle tools on every plan, plus angle and polygon area with Pro. Results show in millimetres or micrometres, not pixels.
Table and statistics
Each measurement goes into a table you arrange in columns. A free account adds N, mean, standard deviation, median and CV; Pro adds a histogram and a box plot.
Export your results
Export the table to CSV for Excel or Google Sheets and save images with the measurements drawn on. Pro exports whole projects as ZIP or PDF.
Save and share
With a free account, projects save to the cloud as you work. Send a read-only link to a colleague, a customer or a teacher.
Use cases
Made for anything small
If it fits under a USB microscope, you can measure it.
Electronics and PCB inspection
Check solder joints, measure pads, traces and pin pitch, and compare a part with its datasheet before you rework a board.
Biology and the classroom
Measure cells, pollen or insect parts. Run a microscope lab on school Chromebooks without asking IT to install anything.
Materials and quality control
Measure fibre diameters, coating defects, cracks and print features, and keep every result in a table for the report.
Hobby and collecting
Coins, stamps, minerals, watch parts or 3D-print layers: measure the details a ruler can’t.
How it works
From plug-in to first measurement in about a minute
- 1
Plug in your microscope
Connect it over USB, open MeasureLab and pick it from the camera list. Your browser asks once for camera access.
- 2
Calibrate
Freeze a frame of a stage micrometer or a ruler, draw a line along a known length and enter it. Calibrate again whenever you change the zoom.
- 3
Measure and export
Draw lengths and shapes on the frozen frame. Every result lands in the table, ready to export as CSV.

Frequently asked questions
Will my USB microscope work with MeasureLab?
Most USB and digital microscopes use the standard USB video class (UVC), the same as webcams. If your computer’s camera app can show the microscope’s picture, MeasureLab can use it too. Microscopes that only stream over Wi-Fi to a phone app are not supported.
Do I need to install anything?
No. MeasureLab runs in your web browser. Open it, allow camera access and start measuring. Chrome and Edge work best.
Does it work on Mac, Chromebook and Linux?
Yes. MeasureLab works anywhere a modern browser can use a USB camera: macOS, Windows, ChromeOS and Linux.
How accurate are the measurements?
As accurate as your calibration and your image. Calibrate with a stage micrometer if you can, use the longest reference that fits in the frame, and calibrate again whenever you change the zoom. The calibration guide walks through it step by step.
Can I try it without a microscope?
Yes. Open the calibrated sample image of a circuit board, or upload any photo that has something of known size in it.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
Not unless you sign in. Without an account, images stay in your browser and are gone when you close the tab. With a free account, projects save to the cloud so you can open them again on any device.
Is MeasureLab free?
Yes. You can use it without an account, and a free account adds cloud saving and statistics. Pro costs $10.49 a month (or $79 a year) and adds unlimited projects and the advanced tools. You can cancel anytime.
Can I export my measurements?
Yes. Export the measurement table as a CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets, and save images with the measurements drawn on them. Pro also exports whole projects as ZIP or PDF and charts as PNG or SVG.
